Technology has paced up our lives. At one point where now everything is just a click away, technology has some severe side effects, if we take our health for granted. Now let me ask you a question: how much time do you spend on your laptop? What about television, your smartphones, tablets, etc? You must be using one of the technology tools daily, especially your smartphone. According to a study published, approximately every day on average an individual spends 10-11 hrs on any digital device. The number is however increasing with time.

All of the digital devices available around us emit a “short-wavelength light” known as “blue light”. This blue light according to the eye specialists if the infinity eye care center has the ability to harm your eyes in the longer run.

Even though, on a daily basis, we are surrounded by natural sources of blue light such as sunlight, etc. So, here you must be assuming, why am I particularly talking about digital devices? Right?! The reason being that the sun is not close to ours while digital devices are. In the case of children, it is more concerning, as per the increasing trend of usage of smartphones among children. The children are at more risk because their eyes are in the developing stage and blue lights can harm them more as compared to the adults.

Digital devices have become a need in the current times. It is not quite realistic to think about getting rid of all the digital devices or to completely avoid them. But, here are a few ways and tips from which you can decrease the dangers of the potential eye problem.

1. Boost the Macular Pigment of Eyes for Blue Light

Macular pigment is basically the pigment is tissue in the eyes that absorb the light. It is in the center of your eyes, called the macula. It is basically a tissue layer of yellow in colour. This macular pigment is the combination of three further pigments i.e. lutein, meso-zeaxanthin, and zeaxanthin. According to the ophthalmologist in Karachi, these pigments can be improved with the use of supplements. But, you need to consult your doctor before opting for any pigment.

2.     Opt for Screen Glasses

You might be taking a break from using the screen to protect your eyes but, it might not be able to fully protect you from the harms of blue light from your screen. This becomes particularly more of an issue when you are working on screens for longer hours and get severe eye strain. So, you should consider getting a pair of “Screen or computer glasses”.

The tinted yellow lens of the glasses protects our eyes and reduces the strain in the eyes. These screen glasses would work more if they are prescribed for a proper working distance. This not only helps in relaxing the eyes but is equally beneficial to protect against eye strain as well. The glasses would be more effective if the glasses would be anti-reflective along with the tint. This combination acts as a shield in protecting your eyes.

3.     Use Screen Filter

Using a screen filter is yet another way to protect your eyes from the blue light. Not only are these screen filters inexpensive but are easily available. You can use these screen filters on any digital device and they can easily absorb the blue light being emitted from the screen. Thus, decreasing your exposure to blue light and reducing the strain in your eyes.

4.      Intraocular lenses (IOLs)

For the treatment of myopia and cataracts, small artificial lenses known as intraocular lenses (IOLs) are used. Interestingly, the natural lens of our eyes is indeed a miracle as they offer protection from a wide range of wavelengths of light. There has been news circulating that these IOLs lenses are able to filter out blue lights. But, how much of this is true, research is still going on which will decide if the IOL is able to protect our eyes from blue light or not.

5.      Give Your Eyes a Break

Last but not the least, the simplest, cheapest, and effective way to protect your eyes from the blue light are to give your eyes some rest. Overexposure to digital screens is harmful so you need to make sure to get regular breaks. Follow the 20-20-20 rule for your eyes.

This rule works in a way that you need to take a break from your work after every 20 minutes, for at least 20 seconds, and look at something that is 20 feet away.

Not only, will help you in reducing eye strain but would act as a reminder that you need to take care of your eyes.
